Thanksgiving Holiday Hunts - Comanche County, Texas
 |
| Cleared for the first time in the 80's, this
sandy hilltop overlooks a large creek in Comanche County. The farmer recalls
'plowing through a large oven where the soil was completely black with ash."
The field has been in coastal Bermuda ever since which makes it difficult to
find points. The wind blown hill top and the few small areas where the
cattle gather comprise less than an acre of decent hunting. The camp is
large and covers many acres but only these small pockets of exposed surface
make it possible to find artifacts. |
  |
| My hunting partner found this nice one
pedestalled among the bird tracks. |
 |
| A nice multi-colored Bulverde lying in wait.
A real fooler, this one had an impact fracture from the tip down through the
base. |
  |
| Hunting this early Archaic camp is sometimes
like and Easter Egg hunt due to the large number of manos found. |
  |
| Another fooler...it's always fun to see how
much of a point is actually under the sand. In this case, it was only the
'tip of the iceberg' found with no iceberg underneath. When hunting in the
main camps it's not uncommon to find many snapped bases. Most likely the
distal end was broken off in use away from camp and the shaft was retrieved
with the fractured base still attached. The shaft was brought back to camp
where the snapped base was then discarded. Below are a few such examples
found in campsites. |
